A solar blanket is an item that is inexpensive, however, provides tremendous benefit. A solar blanket is a cover that you put on the pool during the season when it’s not in use. You can put it on the pool manually or with the use of a solar roller. The benefits of a solar blanket are:

Prevents water loss caused by evaporation – The use of a solar blanket can significantly reduce water loss caused by evaporation. In some cases, a pool can lose up to quarter inch per day to evaporation if left uncovered. A solar blanket acts as a barrier between your pool and the surrounding environment. With the use of a blanket, not only are you saving on water, you are also saving on the cost of chemicals to balance the water and the cost to heat your pool.
Retains heat in the pool – If you are using a heater to heat your pool, by using a solar blanket to cover your pool, this will help to keep the heat in the pool for a longer period of time. It can save up to 75% of heating costs ! A solar blanket also has the ability to raise the temperature of your pool water as much as 10 degrees above the ambient temperature when left on the pool.
Prevents debris from getting into the pool – A solar blanket helps keep dirt & debris out of your pool, keeping your water looking clean and clear.

To prolong the life of your solar blanket, here are a few suggestions for you:

• Do not leave your cover on the pool for the entire day. Or else, the water will get too hot and develop algae. You need to allow the water to breathe. It’s best to keep the blanket on at night and leave the pool open during the day
• Leave the cover off for a day after super-chlorination or major chemical adjustments
• Use a protective sheet to protect the solar blanket from the sun while it’s not in use. This can be purchased with your solar blanket. Also, during the winter months, its best to store it indoors
• Depending on the size and shape of your pool, a solar cover can be difficult to handle and store manually. Consider purchasing a solar roller which would make it easier to put the cover on the pool and to take it off
