Pool Filter Tips

Along with maintaining the right chemical balance, proper filtration is the most important element of pool maintenance.

Here at Bremner Pools, we recommend two types of pool filters – the Hayward Cartridge Filter and the Pentair Tagelus Filter. Pool filters are an important part of pool maintenance, but since it does the hard work of cleaning hard matter out of your pool, it needs its own maintenance and cleaning schedule.

When does my filter need cleaning?
A significantly decreased flow usually indicates that your filter needs cleaning. You can measure this with the flow meter or simply by observation.

Cleaning

• Cartridge filters should be cleaned once or twice a season.
• Simply wash the element off with water – using a garden hose only. A pressure washer can damage the unit.
• Clean the exterior of the Pentair Tagelus Filter with mild detergents and water only – no solvents.
• Rinse from top to bottom.
• Backwashing is your first line of defence when it comes to cleaning out the filter for optimal operation.
• But – don’t backwash too often – it can actually cause the filter to operate less efficiently.
• If, at any time, the starting pressure after backwashing the filter indicates 4 to 6 PSI higher than normal starting pressure, it is time to perform a chemical cleaning procedure
• You should clean more often if there are adverse weather conditions, heavy rains, large quantities of dust or pollens in the air or a lot of insects (like we can expect during this damp summer).

When does my filter need replacing?
If the pressure begins at 10 PSI higher than the usual starting pressure, or begins to build very soon after you’ve cleaned the filter, it typically indicates that the filter itself needs to be replaced. When it’s not working properly, the water still can’t get through and the pressure will begin to build almost immediately.
