Pool Liner Maintenance Tips

At Bremner Pool & Spa, we have over 30 years of experience installing and repairing pool vinyl liners.  It’s become our bread and butter!  Every summer, we go out to visit customers who are experiencing problems with their liners that could have been avoided by following proper maintenance procedures.  Based on our experience, here are some tips that can help to prolong the life of your pool liner.  A pool liner is a pretty significant investment, so following the tips below can extend its useful life.

• Maintaining proper water chemistry to prevent fading and wrinkling of the liner.   Pay particular attention to your pH, alkalinity and chlorine levels as wrinkles can form in the liner if any of these levels are off. 
• Be careful when adding chlorine into the pool as chlorine can stain and/or wrinkle your liner when you add it directly into the pool without mixing it or dissolving it.  Consider installing a chlorinator in your equipment to add chlorine into the pool rather than adding pucks to the skimmer or adding liquid chlorine directly into the pool
• Install a pool cover when the pool is not in use.  This will prevent debris and any other object from falling into the pool and potentially causing a rip in the liner.  When the pool is up and running during the summer, use a solar blanket to cover the pool when no one is swimming and when you shut the pool down for the winter, install a safety cover or tarp cover to protect the liner. 
• Brush the water line as well as the walls often to remove any debris, residue and/or algae that is clinging onto the walls.  Be sure to use a brush that’s specifically designed for vinyl liner pools
• Avoid any pool toys that could potentially cause a hole in the liner. 
• Make sure that you do not empty a vinyl liner pool as this can destroy your liner.  If you have a leak in the pool, it’s critical to find it and patch it right away to avoid the pool from draining
