What is the difference between a Millivolt Pool Heater and a Digital Electronic Ignition Pool Heater?

This is a question that we receive often when we are dealing with customers regarding their gas pool heaters.  These units are available with two different control designs to meet your requirement. They are available with a digital electronic ignition, or as a millivolt design.

Millivolt

  • The millivolt ignition system does not require external power. It generates its’ own current internally, with a small thermocouple driven by the constant pilot.
  • Has a standing pilot where the pilot should be burning all the time. But, it’s possible that it can burn out (due to wind) and needs to be re-lit
  • It has a mechanical thermostat that you use to control the temperature of the heater

Electronic

  • It has a digital display control panel which controls the temperature
  • Requires external power for the heater to work. May incur extra electrical costs as the heater requires external power (120VAC or 240VAC)
  • Electronic ignition. When you turn it on, it lights. There is an electronic spark that ignites the pilot when you turn it on.
  • The electronic ignition is energy efficient. The pilot only comes on when you turn it on. This is an energy efficient way to control your gas as you don’t need a continuous pilot.
  • Simple setup and easy programming, as well as easy-to-understand diagnostics and simple connections to remote controls.
