Durham Region just west of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has taken the lead in a form of crime prevention of particular interest to swimming pool owners in particular – water theft.

Water theft is considered serious enough by Durham Police that they issued a warning recently and have appealed to the public by setting up a snitch hotline. Individuals and companies alike are stealing water by the thousands of litres from fire hydrants, police claim in a statement, and they’re urging anyone who sees such a theft in progress to call the snitch line or better yet – take a picture of the culprit with their cell phone.

Police say the stolen water is used for all sorts of water-heavy projects like sodding new lawns or filling up private swimming pools. Whether you’re in Durham, Scarborough or Etobicoke, pool owners are naturally concerned with water conservation issues in general and if someone’s stealing thousands of litres, it’s affecting the price we all pay.

Durham police laid 12 charges in 2011 & 2012 with 10 convictions and fines in the neighbourhood of $1,000 to $2,000 a pop. They initially launched the program three years ago when water theft became a serious issue. And, it’s not limited to Durham region by any means; many other municipalities across the country are talking about the water hydrant theft and what to do about it.
